What is ARPA-H?

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health is a federal agency modeled after DARPA — the program behind the internet, GPS, and mRNA vaccines.

Established in 2022 with a $1.5 billion annual budget, ARPA-H funds high-risk, high-reward health innovation that’s too early or too radical for traditional venture capital and too applied for NIH.

This is not a grant. ARPA-H awards milestone-gated contracts — typically $5M to $50M — to startups, academic labs, and hospitals building breakthrough technologies across therapeutics, devices, diagnostics, AI, cybersecurity, manufacturing, and healthcare delivery.

The agency has funded 242 projects across 30 programs, and four Mission Office funding tracks are open year-round on a rolling basis.

If your work is revolutionary and translational, ARPA-H may be the largest source of non-dilutive capital you’ve never applied for.
